Gdansk winter

Poshmum is in Gdansk care of Jet2 flights direct from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK. Chaotic processing of our entry by the customs officials. Our flight took just over 2 hours, but it took an hour and a half, thanks to the (none) efficacy of the EU imposed system, before we sank into a taxi to take us to the Puro Hotel Gdansk Stare Miasto. We were welcomed by an efficient and friendly team. The hotel is very modern and boasts a spa, restaurant and bar. Complimentary coffee in the lobby. Warm comfortable rooms and a generous breakfast.

We didn’t just come for the Christmas markets, but when in Rome…….(!). Gdansk won an award in 2024 for having the best such markets. It’s extremely pretty, to say the least.

Poshmum tip: many Christmas Market stalls begin to close after 7pm apart from the very touristy ones. Consider visiting between 4.30 to 6.30pm to optimise your experience.

Poshmum tip: the key sites are very walkable if you have average fitness. See this link for a self guided walking tour that takes in all the major must sees: GPS my city – Gdansk

Back at The Puro Stare Miasto, we have a very nice dinner. How about this for Beetroot Carpaccio? :

Perhaps my photography doesn’t do this full justice, so just take Poshmum’s word for it!

Do head for Gdansk’s World War 2 museum. If you are here on a Tuesday, admission is complimentary, although the numbers admitted are of course capacity limited. Hear accounts from the Polish perspective and prepare to discover alternative viewpoints than perhaps you may have come to be familiar with.

Afterwards, we found Curry Masala Indian restaurant, delicate but well seasoned dishes, and a warm welcome by staff whose command of English is excellent and in some ways aligns well with Poshmum speak! Try an Indian Kamasutra beer to wash your dinner down, thoroughly decent!

Nice riverside stroll back to the hotel

The museum of Solidarity tells the tale of how shipyard workers not only stood up to the communist regime but how their actions catalysed the collapse of the iron curtain. This hugely important historical moment is captured respectfully in this excellent space.

On our last day, we have a fairly long walk to the railway station from where we pick up a direct bus to the airport. It takes nearly an hour, so only do this if you have lots of time before your flight.

Annoying constant and loud plugging of duty-free offers by the Jet2 cabin crew marred Poshmum’s enjoyment of the flight.
